What If Understanding Your Pain Is The First Step Toward Changing It?

For millennia, humans have been trying to make sense of pain. Much of the way we still think about and treat pain today is based on a model that is nearly 400 years old. Imagine trying to navigate today’s world with a 400-year-old map. You might eventually get where you’re going…You’d also miss a lot. Thankfully, pain science didn’t stop 400 years ago. Our understanding of pain has exploded in recent decades.

One of the biggest shifts? We’ve learned that pain doesn’t exist in a silo. For years, we treated pain as a tissue problem. Then, for some people, it became an “it’s all in your head” problem. More recently, some have suggested it’s simply repressed emotions.

Pain isn’t one thing.

Pain doesn’t live in a silo.

It’s influenced by our nervous system, our previous experiences, our beliefs, stress, sleep, movement, relationships, and the world around us.

Pain is always real. And it’s complex.

One of the most exciting discoveries in modern pain science is that understanding pain can actually change the pain experience. Knowledge creates safety. That sense of safety makes movement feel more possible. The nervous system is constantly asking one question: “Am I safe?” Every positive movement experience gives the nervous system new evidence that it doesn’t need to be quite so protective.

Knowledge and movement create a positive upward spiral, each strengthening the other. As safety grows, fear softens. Confidence returns. And life gets bigger.

Knowledge alone isn’t the finish line. It can be the first step toward creating safety and opening the door to meaningful change.

That’s why I created Pain Is NO Joke ®

It’s a six-week experience that brings together modern pain science, education, movement, creativity, and connection to help people better understand their pain and discover practical ways to move forward.

The first series is in person in Northern Virginia starting July 28. Not local? Join the virtual waitlist.

And if someone came to mind while you were reading this, I’d be grateful if you shared it with them.

Because pain is not a life sentence.
