Spring is my favorite time of year as a runner.
Usually we think about New Year’s as the time for new beginnings. But for runners (or wanna be runners), spring is the time to come alive.
Let’s face it, the winter is a tough season for running, especially this past one where we faced walls of snow and ice with weeks of freezing temperatures.
As the temperature starts to warm up and the blooms begin, it’s an opportunity to purposefully start fresh. This is a great time to start your running journey, begin the base building for a fall race, or just shake off the rust from a slow winter season.
Regardless of where you are starting from or heading to, the approach is the same: Set out your goals – What are you hoping to achieve? Working towards becoming a regular runner or planning to PR a fall marathon are equally valid, but very different goals.
Develop a plan – Determine what you need to do to in order to get from here to there. Often people think they can just go out and run, but understanding how to build, when to pull back, and the time it takes to effectively train are essential. This sets you up to successfully achieve your goals and ensures that you are building safely, reducing your risk of injury.
Have patience – This is one of the biggest challenges. As we enjoy the beautiful weather and start feeling like our body is used to running, it’s easy to push harder than we should. Change and adaptation take time. It’s not something that can be rushed. Enjoy the process and trust that it will get you there.
Embrace the spring as your new season of running, thoughtfully, with intention, and with excitement for the promises it brings.
