A mantra is defined as a sacred word, sound, or phrase repeated during mediation to calm the mind and focus concentration.
In the mental health field, we have numerous other terms for this general concept including inner dialogue, thought bubbles (like those displayed by characters in graphic novels or comics), and self-talk. The basic premise, in fact, of cognitive therapy is we feel the way we think. A core strategy as a therapist is to help people build awareness of their automatic thinking patterns and to guide them to develop more helpful thoughts, done through reframing and thought restructuring. A useful tool is to decrease the threat we assign to negative self-talk or unhelpful thinking. For example, one can visualize distressing inner dialogue in a teeny tiny font (thereby taking up less space and carrying little power) or picture the thought on a banner trailing behind a plane overhead as you are happily sitting in your beach chair (thus creating a sillier image that allows for a humorous response).
As we shift into September and settle back into our daily routines, let’s take a moment to be more mindful of how we talk to ourselves. Transition into a new season with a focus on healthier self-talk and experience the peaceful calm that follows.
