On Your Mark… Get Set… Trot!

Mile After Mile

We are officially one month out from the 50th Annual Alexandria Turkey Trot!

Whether it’s your first race or your 50th, now is the time to start thinking about race day.

Finesse your training: If you’re newer to running or walking, keep training for the distance. Five miles isn’t something you can necessarily just knock out with no training. If you are a more experienced runner and training for a PR or time goal, this is the time to dial in to focus on the last few hard workouts. It takes around two weeks for training adaptations so you have time to get race ready!

Figure out your gear: Start thinking about what shoes, clothes, and anything else you might need. The weather can definitely be variable at this time of year (hopefully, no rain this year!) so have some options. If you are not used to running or walking distances in the cold weather, start making a plan for clothing. The key to cold weather workouts is layering and wicking fabrics. First run is steer clear of cotton; it will retain sweat and only make you colder. Either materials specifically designed for workouts or wool make great base layers to keep you warm. Things like gloves, warm socks, ear warmers, and hats can go a long way in ensuring you are warm enough on race day. But remember not to overdress, once you start running, you’ll warm up quickly. Ideally, you should be slightly chilly the first mile or so (although this is sometimes easier said than done).

Fueling: There is no need for carb loading before a race of this distance; however, you should plan on eating something beforehand. If you are not used to eating or drinking before running in the morning, you have time to practice. You don’t have to have a full meal, you just need to take in some simple carbohydrates before your race. The goal is to have easy to digest carbohydrates to fuel your race without upsetting your stomach. Some things that work for runners can be toast, oatmeal, graham crackers, fruit, gummy candy, pretzels, or even liquid carbs like sports drink or juice. Try some of these before your runs in the coming weeks to figure out what will work for you on race day.

Have fun!: The most important part. The Alexandria Turkey Trot is a fun, fast, and flat course with a huge turn out by the neighborhood to cheer runners on. Enjoy the time that you’re out there and get into the spirit of Thanksgiving and community. There’s a reason this race has lasted 50 years and YOU get to be a part of it!
