Sometimes the simplest message can have the biggest impact. We want it to be easy. We hope that healthy habits will evolve organically borne from our very best intentions. I too wish it were so, but healthy habits do require a hefty dose of DISCIPLINE, especially at the outset.
It takes 2-3 weeks to establish a new habit. The first few days are pretty easy, as motivation runs high. Week 2 is tougher. If you have changed your diet by removing sweets and processed food you may feel deprived or even headachy. Maybe you are sore from adding a few weight training sessions to your week.
There is no way around it, to reap the benefits, you have to go through it.
Nearly all healthy habits offer a reward of improved energy and clarity of mind–who doesn’t want that? This includes habits like meditation, spiritual practice, good nutrition, exercise, yoga, as well as modalities like chiropractic care, massage therapy and even your dental check-ups. Implementing change provides the fuel that can be reinvested. Discipline becomes much easier. Not only do you feel virtuous and energized when you follow through, but you feel pretty bad if you falter. Use this leverage to sustain the habit.
Don’t be too ambitious. Pick one habit at a time. Sure, forgive yourself for not being perfect, but hold yourself accountable.
