Family time with grown children is tricky. While we do live on a small “hobby-farm” with three horses, a dog, and chickens, our field trip took us to a REAL farm that helps to provide our community with gorgeous fresh produce, eggs and meat.
Hidden Creek Farm in Delaplane, Virginia, is a local, regenerative farm where they manage the crops and animals in a healthy, sustainable manner. We learned about the process of working with the local environment, properly rotating pastures to maintain healthy herb- and pesticide-free soil for nutritious crops, as well as managing the land to provide an optimal environment for happy, healthy animals.
Hidden Creek Farm is a great example of how we can support a healthier local food system. Our food should nourish more than just our body. It should connect us to the seasons, the earth, and the people who raise the crops and animals. It was an awesome spot for a family adventure. Feeding giant hogs the un-saleable eggs was truly an adventure to me, lol!
For a change of pace from your local pool this summer, consider a farm visit. Every trip helps strengthen farms that prioritize sustainability and stewardship, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy beautiful landscapes and food that nourishes body, mind and spirit.
