A new school year is starting — which can be a great time to start a new healthy habit or routine. If you’re looking to start your fitness journey, these are some tips to get you started AND to sustain things over time:
Small Changes – Don’t try to do everything all at once. Smaller steps are easier to start and to integrate as a regular part of your life. Over time they add up to much bigger changes. If you want to start running, start with 10 minutes and run/walk intervals. If you’re looking to strength training, start with a few exercises and lower weights. Commit to doing them three times a week. Then build from there.
Structure – Have a plan. When you’re starting something new, having clear guidance and structure that lays out each piece keeps you focused and prevents uncertainty. Let that structure take the decision making out of your hands so the only thing you have to do is show up.
Patience – Change takes time. Don’t expect to go out for your first run and be ready for a marathon. It’s easy to push too hard too soon. Build slowly and introduce training as a regular part of your life so that it becomes integrated into your routine. That way both your body and your lifestyle have time to adapt.
Support System – Find people to share process with. This can be family, friends, a coach, run club, or even an online forum. Whether it’s to cheer you on, hold you
accountable, or to commiserate when things get tough, having people in your corner who want you to success will make a difference.
Starting a new healthy habit can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.
