The family memories that we create during childhood are deeply ingrained and often
retrieved/revisited across our lifespan. Summertime is especially full of opportunities to
interact with one another, as the academic demands of school are removed (or certainly
lessened) and there seems to be an increased societal permission to slow down, relax, and have
fun.
Whether it be hanging at the local pool, spending time together at home, taking the long-
awaited vacations, packing up for a weekend road trip, or visiting grandparents – these
experiences are essential and invaluable, benefitting our physical and mental well-being.
As a child and adolescent psychologist, I so enjoy experiencing the energy of the people who
come into my office over the summer, sharing about the family wedding they went to and the
cool things they did over the holiday weekend. Showing off sun tans and new T-shirts.
‘Laughing with their parents about who fell off the tube on the back of the boat, who got
pummeled by the big ocean waves, and who got the most mosquito bites on the camping trip.
Take the time to soak in these long, hot days because they go fast!
“You can’t slow down time. You can only hope to use it wisely.” – Viola Shipman (author)
