The “Heart of Del Ray Award” is presented annually by the Del Ray Business Association to the business that the community feels serves as the heart and soul of Del Ray. On January 26th, we will announce the 5 finalists and open up voting by the community. Before the voting process to select the winner begins, we would like to get YOUR nomination for who you think should be one of the five businesses on the ballot. The Del Ray Business Association Board will then take into consideration all the nominations and comments in order to determine the five finalists.

Nominations should be based on which business best demonstrates their warm and welcoming attitude to the community/customers, their commitment and generosity to the community, and to their overall contribution to what makes Del Ray the best place in the world to live, work and shop! In other words, what business warms your “heart” when you here its name? Please note: A business can only win the award once!

Former winners of the Heart of Del Ray Award are as follows:
    • 2009: A Show of Hands
    • 2010: Jen Walker McEnearney Associates
    • 2011: Bobi Bomar, Homes of Alexandria, Weichert Realtors
    • 2012: The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray
    • 2013: The Greener Cleaner of Del Ray
    • 2014: Del Ray Pizzeria
    • 2015: Mind the Mat Pilates and Yoga
    • 2016: Caboose Cafe
    • 2017: Del Ray Cafe
Nominations must be submitted by noon on Monday, January 22nd by emailing Please feel free to include a sentence why you feel they deserve to be nominated. Remember - we are just soliciting nominations - we are NOT voting yet. The five finalists will be announced on January 26th and voting will begin at that time until February 8th. Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you.

The Del Ray Business Association elected Sue Kovalsky president of the business group representing small, independent, and locally-owned businesses in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria.

"I am humbled and honored to be able to represent the many businesses of Del Ray and this vibrant community that I love so much," said Kovalsky. "I look forward to serving the Del Ray area and participating in its continued growth and blossoming potential."

Kovalsky, a realtor with McEnearney Associates and the Jen Walker Team, and has served on the DRBA board since 2010; most recently as Vice President.  She has been an active member of the events committee and received the Business Star Award from the Del Ray Business Association in 2016 for her community involvement and service.

During her term as president, Kovalsky plans to use her business background to streamline the association's current processes. "While preserving the heart and soul of our organization, I will promote an open organization where we can work smarter and more effectively market our events to our current audience as well as a broader local audience," said Kovalsky.  Kovalsky and her wife, along with their four pets, live in Del Ray.

Also appointed to complete the terms of three recently vacated board positions are Maureen Clyne of @home real estate, Matthew Gillette of National Community Church, and Daniel Mallon of Friends of Guest House.

They join Bill Blackburn of Pork Barrel BBQ, Mara Benner of Four Directions Wellness, Shannon Catlett of John Marshall Bank,  Lauren Fisher of Del Ray Psychological & Wellness Associates, Anthony Istrico of Istrico Productions, Pat Miller of Art on the Avenue, Sandy Modell of Wholistic Hound Academy, citizen member Gayle Reuter, and Hilary Riedemann of Idea Sink Marketing on the board.

The Del Ray Business Association represents the independently-owned restaurants, retailers, and businesses in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria; DRBA also hosts community events, including First Thursdays, Taste of Del Ray, Well Ray, The Del Ray Music Festival, The Del Ray Halloween Parade, The Alexandria Turkey Trot, and more.

Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) President Sue Kovalsky and Wellness Chair Lauren Fisher present a $6,000 check to Neighborhood Health executive director Basim Khan, MD.  DRBA hosted a Candy Cane Bar Crawl in December to raise money for the local clinic, which provides medical, dental and behavioral health care to over 17,000 children and adults across the region, regardless of a patient's ability to pay. DRBA places a focus on giving back to the community through its events; in 2017, the organization, which represents small businesses in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, raised over $20,000 for Alexandria-based non-profits.

The Del Ray Business Association presented its annual Del Ray Star Awards on Dec. 18, to recognize key individuals who have gone above and beyond in their volunteer roles serving the Del Ray Business Association and Del Ray community.

The Del Ray Business Association presented its 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award to Carol Bailey.  Bailey, who has lived in Del Ray since 1958, has been an integral part of Del Ray's signature events from their inception, from managing the permitting process to day-of logistics. "There is no one like Carol Bailey, who was born and raised in Del Ray and who has literally dedicated her life to others and to Del Ray -- first as an advocate for children with special needs and then for the last several decades working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure every special event in Del Ray happens without a hitch," said Del Ray Business Association Board Member Gayle Reuter.  "Her dedication to Del Ray truly comes from her heart and always with a smile."

The Business Awards were given to Paul Haire of Your Dog's Best Friends and The Dog Store, and Karen Johnson of PawsGo.   Haire, a long-time Del Ray business owner, was the inspiration behind the Del Ray Halloween Parade 21 years ago, and consistently supports community efforts and events in Del Ray.  "Whenever we need something, Paul's there," said Reuter.   Johnson was recognized for her tremendous efforts in building the Del Ray community; she was instrumental in launching the Del Ray Farmers' Market 25 years ago, chairs the annual Taste of Del Ray, and has worked to build Del Ray as a dog-friendly community -- while supporting animal welfare organizations and local businesses -- through PawsGo.

The Citizen Award was presented to Jennifer Atkins, who works tirelessly to support the youth in our neighborhood as a past president of the Mount Vernon Community School PTA; the chair of the Mount Vernon Big Flea, the school's largest fundraiser; and as a volunteer at community events, including as coordinator of the Kids Art Corner at Art on the Avenue.

The City/Government Award winner is Sergeant Daniel Briel of the Alexandria City Police Department, who is the Police Department's liaison for special events.  "We are so fortunate to work with a City that is literally partners with us in everything we do," said Bailey. "Sgt. Briel is great about attending early morning planning meetings and often taking care of last minute requests, always with a positive 'we can make this happen' attitude."

The Youth Award was presented to the T.C. Williams High School Key Club and T.C. Williams High School Leadership Team, for providing key support and energy for many of Del Ray's events. "We have some of the most amazing students at T.C. Williams," said Reuter. "For the Halloween parade, there were here from the moment of set-up until the last-minute tear-down, and were unbelievable."

Outgoing Del Ray Business Association President Dennis Belmont also presented Presidential Awards, recognizing Mara Benner, Lauren Fisher, and Brian Story for their work on the Del Ray Business Association board.

The Del Ray Holiday Tree Lighting will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 6 pm at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, kicking off a month-long holiday celebration. The holiday activities reflect the Del Ray neighborhood's reputation as a dining, retail, wellness, and arts destination in the region, along with its commitment to supporting Alexandria non-profits year-round.

All events are free and open to all.  Among the activities planned:

    • Holiday Tree Lighting: Kick off the holidays with a visit to Del Ray on Sat. Dec 2 at 6pm for the annual holiday tree lighting at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, located at the intersection of Mount Vernon and Oxford Avenues.  The event features an appearance by Santa Claus, who will lead carols and sit for photos with children. Participants are urged to bring nonperishable food and diapers for Carpenter’s Shelter.  Continue the celebration (and start your holiday shopping!) with a stroll down Mount Vernon Avenue, which will be illuminated by thousands of luminarias in honor of the late Nancy Dunning.

    • Holiday On The Avenue:  Local artists have been commissioned to complete a series of hand-painted holiday windows at businesses along Mount Vernon Avenue.  Businesses and local non-profits are also teaming up to decorate Christmas trees along the Avenue; the winning tree, selected by online voters, will earn $500 for that non-profit.

    • Shops of Del Ray’s Ladies’ Night Out:  Join the Shops of Del Ray on Thurs., Dec. 7 from 6pm to 9pm to shop local and enjoy special promotions — all while sipping Virginia wine.  Find the perfect gift on The Avenue or at an exclusive outdoor pop-up shop of local artisans at the Just ASK parking lot, located at the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Bellefonte Avenue.

    • 2nd Annual Candy Cane Bar Crawl: Take a break from the bustle of holiday preparations and enjoy specials at 12 Del Ray restaurants during a neighborhood beer crawl on Sat., Dec. 9 from 2pm to 6pm.  Tickets are $10, with proceeds benefiting Neighborhood Health, which provides essential health care to the uninsured in our community.

    • Twelve Days of Wellness in Del Ray:  The Wellness community kicks off 12 days of self-care during the holidays with outdoor Polar Bear Yoga; the series includes special giveaways, classes, workshops, and more.

    • First Night Alexandria: On New Years Eve from 6pm to 9pm, bring the entire family out for an old-fashioned carnival featuring games, face-painting, and more at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center.
All events are presented by the Del Ray Business Association, which represents the independently-owned shops, retailers, and businesses in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria.  For more information, visit

In recognition of their service to the City of Alexandria, representatives from the Alexandria Police Department, Alexandria Fire Department, and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office will be recognized as the Grand Marshals of the 42nd Annual Alexandria Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning.

"We are so thankful for the dedication of our Alexandria first responders, as they work tirelessly serve and protect our City every single day," said Del Ray Business Association President Dennis Belmont.  "We are especially grateful for their tremendous work responding to the June shooting at Eugene Simpson Field."

In the spirit of the holiday, runners and spectators are encouraged to bring two nonperishable food items on race day to support ALIVE!, a nonprofit serving Alexandria’s needy.  Last year, ALIVE! received 2,102 pounds of food, $400 in cash donations, and a $5,000 check from the Del Ray Business Association to support ALIVE!'s Food Program as part of the 41st Annual Alexandria Turkey Trot.
