Del Ray Halloween Parade: Best Decorated Stroller, House, and Dog Costume Winners!

Halloween-212     Superheroes, ghosts, goblins, the T.C. Williams Zombie Band, and scores of decked-out strollers and pets in costume marched down Mount Vernon Avenue for the 22nd Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade on Oct. 28.

A record number of marchers -- cheered on by thousands lining the Avenue -- was led by Mount Vernon Community School fourth grader Noa Hottin.  Blind since birth and selectively mute, Noa hadn’t spoken at school for three years when he moved to Alexandria at age six, and struggled to connect with Braille in English.  Three years later, he is now the reigning national champion of his age group in the 2018 Braille Challenge, sponsored by the Braille Institute.

“Noa represents who we are as a school.  He is an example of our diversity,  appreciation for culture and languages, and the resilience of our students,” said Mount Vernon Community School principal Liza Burrell-Aldana. “The work done with Noa's  family is also a clear example of the benefits of establishing a strong home-school partnership.  When that partnership is solid, together,  we are able to help our students achieve to their fullest potential. I am very proud of him.”

As part of the parade festivities, the Del Ray Business Association presented awards for best stroller, best pet costume, best decorated business, and best decorated house.
